Buyer Beware

Have you been approached by another natural gas marketing company, or received a letter from PG&E stating your account will start service with a company other than Tiger? Have their representatives promised an attractive savings or a free month or more of service?

You should know that promises like these are usually only possible if you are grossly overcharged during part of your contract term with the other supplier.

It is important for you to know what exact price your account(s) will be charged for the entire life of your contract, as well as whether you can be agreeable to all the contract terms, including the cancellation policy. You also want to know that you will be with a company that has your best interests at heart, and will work hard to not only save you money, but provide you the best customer service possible.

Here are a few questions to ask the other company:

  • What exactly would my contract price be, and for how long would this price apply?
  • What is the cancellation policy under this contract? Would I be liable for any fees or early termination damages?
  • Would I be charged a customer fee? What would it be? (Tiger’s highest Customer Fee is $1.50 per month when most competitors are significantly higher)
  • Who would my representative be and would I be able to reach them directly when I have questions or need help?
  • Will I save money? Will I save for the entire life of the contract or only one or two months?
  • Can I receive a report periodically (for free) that shows me how much I am saving?

If the other company:

- Cannot give you an exact price…

- Is vague on their contract terms…

- Won’t give you a copy of your contract terms and price to review in writing

- Isn’t quickly available when you call…

- Charges a customer fee more than $2 / month…

- Won’t give you a cost savings report during your contract term with them…

…consider that this may not be a company you want to do business with.
