What is “Deregulation”?
Natural Gas supply was deregulated in New Mexico in 1987. “Deregulation” means:
- No longer are customers like you forced to purchase your natural gas only from your local utility.
- Now you have the power to choose a natural gas supplier and an energy plan that will reduce your energy costs and provide you with additional pricing options.
- You can choose which plan offers the best deal for your home or business, rather than being tied to the one rate your local utility decides is best for you.
This customized approach allows you to control your energy costs through multiple fixed or market based pricing options and better serves your home or business’ energy needs and budget. It’s a simple law of economics that when companies compete for your business, you win. Competition drives down prices and you pay less.

How does this work?
Your energy service consists of two parts: 1) your energy supply and 2) your energy delivery. When you choose Tiger Natural Gas, you choose the company that will supply the natural gas commodity to your home or business. You remain a customer of your local utility, NMGC, because they own the pipelines through which the natural gas will be delivered. They still read your meter, and will still take care of any pipe-related emergencies. You will receive one consolidated bill from Tiger with your NMGC and Tiger charges, and you will pay Tiger for both.
